The Purloined Pony is a fan-made story-game by Chris, written in the style of the Choose Your Own Adventure series of children's books. The story stars background pony Carrot Top as the player/reader character. It spans 86 pages and has 18 possible endings.
Style[]
The story-game, like most Choose Your Own Adventure stories, is written in the second person perspective. The reader makes choices on behalf of the main character by turning to different pages in the story, as indicated at the bottom of each page, and these choices affect how the story will end, as well as how long it will take.
Plot[]
The story-game's central goal is to rescue Apple Bloom, who has been captured by a race of imp creatures called boggies (the author calls these boggies "evil Brownies"[1]). This can be accomplished in a number of ways (which tie into each other in various ways – many pages are reused for multiple threads of the plot), or even outright ignored at the very beginning of the story.
The first choice in the story comes when Carrot Top must decide whether to help Twilight Sparkle study the boggies or go back to her farm. Choosing the former option starts off the main storyline immediately, and the player can then decide whether to help Twilight study, fetch Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy or Rarity for help, ask Zecora's advice on the matter, or just go back home.
None of the eighteen endings are lethal to the player character, but only a few of them end with Carrot Top successfully rescuing Apple Bloom.
A set of reviews and analyses of the story-game can be found in two parts (Part 1 , Part 2 ) at story-author Chris's blog "One Man's Pony Ramblings ".
Inspiration[]
The author claims to have been inspired to write The Purloined Pony by another, similar story: Onyx Origins and the Orb of Omnipotence, by Lightsideluc[2].
